The Sunday Spread: A Call to Collage

Hi there. How are you?

Welcome back to the Sunday Spread. Each week I give you a glimpse into my sketchbook and drawing practice. Posted most Sundays.

Long time followers will remember that collage and magazine used to play a large role in my work. Every piece I made for a time included bits and pieces of patterned paper.

When a Wayfair catalog arrived in the mail then other day, I was magnetically drawn to the patterns once again. I quickly got the scissors out and added some collage bits to a sketchbook page.

I was called to collage for the first time in ages!

1/20/24: Floral Collage

Florals have been a go-to motif for me throughout my career, that’s where I started with this one. Once the magazine petals were glued in place, I went to work with my trusty black ballpoint pen.

A closeup look at the collage & drawing.

Scribbly Scratch

I’ve intentionally been working looser than I normally do. It's freeing for me to embrace the imperfections. A few years ago, I probably wouldn’t have posted something this rough, but now I embrace it. I’m totally fine with this “scribbly scratch” as it adds interest and personality.

That’s All for Now

Here’s a rare snap of our cats Richard and Cleo together. When we got Richard as young kitten we had hoped that Cleo would befriend him and show him the cat ropes. (Not so much.) They tolerate each other, and every once in a while, even like each other for a bit.

Ciao, Jen
