The Sunday Spread: January 6, 2024

Hi there. How are you?

Welcome back to the Sunday Spread. Each week I give you a glimpse into my sketchbook and drawing practice. Posted most Sundays.

I took a much needed break from posting and drawing for a good chunk of December. Besides being busy and holiday filled, I just didn’t feel like drawing. So I didn’t.

12/28: Finally in the Mood

It wasn’t until after Christmas that I pulled out my sketchbook and worked on this spread. There’s a rough quality to this one, but I like it that way. It’s balanced, has a nice flow, and some good energy.

12/31: NYE Burst

I did this one in my larger square format sketchbook, and quickly tired of it. So, without judgement, I moved on.

1/1: Fast & Loose

As I’ve drawn the last few weeks, I find myself thinking, “Am I enjoying this or am I just going through the motions? Am I making this because I want to or because I need to post something?” This is a problem!

I’m not feeling particularly inspired or excited about my work. I’m not quite sure how I’ll work my way out of this feeling, but I’ve been here before. I just need some time.

On New Year’s Day, I let my hand move about the page without much thought. I just did what felt good. I went back to some familiar spiral and floral forms that often find a way into my work. Color felt good too, so I added in the marker elements. (Someday I’ll get back to paint…But that means I have to work from somewhere other than my couch!).

1/6: Staying Loose & Experimenting

I really like this one and it flowed out of me on a Saturday afternoon. There are some new things happening here. There’s some energy and life.

That’s All For Now

I leave you as always, with some cute cat photos.

Ciao, Jen
