The Sunday Spread: November 12, 2023

Hi there. How are you?

Welcome back to the Sunday Spread. Each week I give you a glimpse into my sketchbook and drawing practice. Posted mostly every Sunday.

I was quite productive during the second half of the week, and completed 3.5 sketchbook spreads between Wednesday and Saturday.

Still Fancying the Flair Pen

I still felt called by the Paper Mate Flair pens and did a couple more pattern drawings in a square format sketchbook that I almost abandoned. The paper isn’t ideal for ballpoint (there’s a bit of texture to the paper), but I’m glad I held onto it. It’s a great size and format for couch drawing (5.5” square) and I’ll use it for these pattern drawings.

I’ve been drawing variations of these scallop shapes for years. As I mentioned last week, repetitive mark making is super relaxing to me, and I come back to the same marks and shapes over and over again.

Lines and More Lines

I liked the idea of making a braided, yarn like drawing. I got frustrated trying to “weave” lines under and over one another and gave up. There’s some fun passages here, but it wasn’t fun to draw after a while, so I gave myself permission to put it away and move on.

Back to Ballpoint

Yesterday, I felt called back to my trusty ballpoint. I made this spread as I watched Netflix from the couch. I was relaxed, so the drawing came easy to me.

I could finish this page, but quite liked it the way it was, so I move on. I started another spread with a black ballpoint, but I’ll keep that one to myself until next week.

That’s All For Now

Here’s what happens almost anytime I try to photograph my sketchbook. The cats are magnetically drawn to the built in string book mark and elastic closure.

Ciao, Jen
